Why does record data stay incomplete?
When the same book looks different across channels, the cause is usually not the data but who entered it and when.
If a book's page count shows as 224 on one site and 232 on another, the problem is usually not the measurement but the stage at which the record was taken.
Three common causes
- Pre-press entry. The record is entered before the book goes to press; the page count changes in the final forme and the record is not updated.
- Channel-specific fields. Every channel asks for different fields; a field nobody asks for is left empty and comes to count as missing.
- Reprinting. Price and printing year change, the other fields stay as they were.
What can be done
Holding the record in one place and distributing it to the channels from there removes all three causes at once. The change is made at a single point and every channel updates the same day.
